In Germany especially, where these magnificent animals capable of overcoming bears and wild boars were much admired, a process of selective breeding was begun. The dogs were crossed with Irish Greyhounds and were called the "Deutsche Dogge" and became the national dog in 1870.
In 1891 the Great Dane Club of Germany adopted a precise standard and a more refined looking dog was being developed known today as the Great Dane. Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, these dogs have nothing to do with Denmark.

Today the Great Dane fill a variety of roles. As companions, show dogs or protectors ,the Dane's intelligence and adaptability make him extremely popular.
His size, elegance, symmetry and carriage result in the beautiful animal we call The Apollo of Dogs....
